8th March every year has been set aside to celebrate women all over the world for their social, economic and political achievements. This year, I choose to celebrate the Strength of a Woman.
A woman is commonly perceived as a weaker vessel yet God has equipped her with unusual strength that is beyond human comprehension. When Peter spoke of women as weaker vessels in 1 Peter 3:7, he did not mean women are weak in every sense of the word that some would like to think but to rather point out to the general truth that women are comparatively weaker in physical strength. Bone and muscle structure are such that men are usually endowed with more physical strength. So, Peter was trying to speak to men not take advantage of a woman's physical strength.

The strength and beauty of a woman is not seen in her physical appearance or outer beauty. It is not seen in the jewelries she adorns herself with neither is it in the heavy make ups or hairdos she wears. All these only add to her outer beauty but not to her inner beauty. A woman's true beauty is found in her inner qualities especially in her ability to overcome challenges or difficult moments because it is in such moments her strength is created. She is the Proverbs 31 woman who finds her strength in difficult or challenging times. Being a proverbs 31 woman is not meant for married women alone but to all women single or married. It was written to man, an advice from his mother on the kind of woman he is to get married to.
CHARACTERISTICS OF A WOMAN WITH STRENGTH
1. VIRTUOUS AND CAPABLE ( PROVERBS 31:10) : The strength of a woman is seen in her personality. In her personality is honor, language of love, bravery, humility, kindness, courage, valour and her representation of Christ through her. We live in a fast paced world where people tend to follow the crowd or trend but a woman of strength will always single herself out of the crowd. I come across such women of virtue and capability everyday. If you are one of such women reading this, then you ought to celebrate your womanhood. And if you are a man reading this whose wife, sisters or daughters are vitreous, then celebrate the women in your life.
2. TRUSTWORTHY ( Proverbs 31:11-12, 23): A woman of strength is a trustworthy person who is faithful in keeping and ensuring the safety of whatever is entrusted in her care. She is faithful to her husband and to everyone around her. She speaks the truth at all times even if it endangers her which in turn causes her to earn respect and trust from those around her. Her faithfulness does not just enrich her life but also of those around her. She does her husband and everyone close to her good at all times.
3. HARDWORKING (Proverbs 31:13-19, 21, 24) : A woman of strength is not an idle or a lazy woman but a hard worker who ensures the well being of her husband, family and those around her. She constantly improves on herself and always provides for her family. She is an early bird who rises early in the morning to get her family and herself set for the day. She is very purposeful with time making sure her day and time counts. She is not just a woman or a housewife but an enterprising woman. She is not a liability but am asset to her husband. She earns an income for herself, makes profit from the little given to her and ensures nothing goes to waste. No wonder God called her a helpmeet to her husband when he formed her out of man in Genesis 2:18. God also called a good thing, one whose husband finds favour with God just by being married to her in Proverbs 18:22. Late Myles nicely put it this way saying women are like incubators who do not just give back what you gave them but brings it back to you in a multiplied form. According to him, when you give a woman sperm, she multiplies it, gives it life and then gives you a baby(s). Give her a house, she will give you a home. Give her groceries, she will give you a meal. Give her a word, you get a sentence and when you give her frustration she will give you hell. That's just how great women are. Because of her goodness towards her husband, he is well known, respected and admired by other men. There are lots of hardworking women today who are working class women and at the same time great wives. Even the full time housewives are hard working in their capacity as housewives. Go to the market places, you will see more of women who are industrious. Some of these women are either heavily pregnant or you see them with babies while they sell their goods or foodstuffs.
4. KIND HEARTED AND FULL OF COMPASSION (Proverbs 30:20) : The strength of a woman is seen in her kindness and generosity towards others especially the needy. She is charitable, full of empathy and compassion. She easily puts herself in one's shoes and not one who is weak to turn her back against those in need of a helping hand from her. There are lots of women in our contemporary time who are known to be tender and softhearted.
