Rivers State Deputy Governor Dr. Mrs. Ipalibo Harry Banigo has urged the Federal Government of Nigeria to undertake some infrastructural development at the Port Harcourt Prisons.
Dr. Banigo stated this when Officers of the Nigeria Correctional Service from the Port Harcourt Maximum Security Prison paid her a courtesy call at the Government House in Port Harcourt on Monday 7th October, 2019.
According to Dr. Banigo “I will encourage some infrastructural development in Port Harcourt Prison, it is happening in other cities why is it not happening in Port Harcourt Port Harcourt is one of the oldest prisons in Nigeria and if other prisons can attract infrastructural development, why not the one in Port Harcourt”. The Deputy Governor stressed.

The Deputy Governor who advocated for the recruitment of more Rivers People into the service said “now that you are undertaking recruitment exercise we think you should try using the local content value and see that more Rivers Indigenes with the requisite qualifications are recruited into the Service”.
Dr. Banigo said although the Nigeria Correctional Service is a Federal Government Agency the Rivers State Government has continued to support the Prisons, noting that her office had carried out several outreaches to the Port Harcourt and Degema Prisons.
The Deputy Governor who congratulated the Nigeria Correctional Services for changing its name from Nigeria Prison Service, expressed the hope that it would live up to its new name as a Correctional Service Agency.
The Deputy Controller of Correctional Service Usman Ibrahim had earlier informed the Deputy Governor that they were at the Government House to keep her abreast with the challenges facing the Port Harcourt Prison with a view of finding solutions to the problems.
He said congestion is one of the greatest challenges the prison is facing, noting that the prison which was initially designed to accommodate about 1,000 inmates now accommodates 4,487 inmates.
