Rivers State Deputy Governor Dr. Mrs. Ipalibo Harry Banigo has averted a major crises brewing in Tombia Community in the Degema Local Government Area over disputes on Youth Election.
Speaking at a stake holders meeting, with chiefs, youths and the political leaders at the Government House in Port Harcourt, on Friday, 26th July 2019.
Dr. Banigo expressed the need for the warring factions to reconcile, work as a team and move the community forward.
The Deputy Governor who informed them that the State Chief Executive Nyesom Ezenwo Wike has approved the complete rehabilitation of the Government Secondary School Tombia to a world class standard, with full boarding facilities, however warned, that they risk losing the project if they refuse to keep the peace.
“The Governor has approved the complete turnaround of Government Secondary school Tombia to be like Government Girls Secondary School Rumuokwuta and Nyemoni Grammar School but he will not execute the project if there is no peace, this is why it is necessary for you to keep the peace. I like education if I was not educated I would not have been who I am today. I do not want the Governor to cancel this project because of your refusal to maintain the peace.” She further stressed.
Dr. Banigo urged members of the Tombia Central Youth Council who were appointed by the various Compound Chiefs to cooperate with the elected Tombia Youth Federation, noting that the youths must respect the elders and constituted authorities for lasting peace to prevail.
In his response the Chairman of the Degema Local Government Area Dr. Tony Philemon who said youths are very important members of the society, expressed gratitude to the Almighty God for using the Deputy Governor to intervene in what would have been a major crisis following disagreements in the conduct of the Tombia Youth Elections.
On his part the Member Representing Degema Constituency in the Rivers State House of Assembly Hon Anthony Soberekon who said peaceful coexistence should start from the homes advised all parties in the conflict to reconcile.
Chief Daye Ikroma Owiye, Provost of the Tombia Council of Chiefs had earlier said misunderstanding between the two youth bodies which threatened the peace, unity and security of the community prompted the Council of Chiefs to write to the Deputy Governor to intervene and thanked her for her quick response which has averted the looming crisis.
Members of the two youth’s bodies Tombia Central Youth Council and Tombia Federation finally agreed to bury the hatchet.
