Have you ever wondered why most new year resolutions fail or hard to achieve? 2019 is just few days away and its about that time you hear and see so many people come up with new year resolutions, having new plans and a new view of life as a result of excitement, renewed energy and optimism into the new year. Nothing wrong with having new year resolutions. We all look forward to having improvements in our lives and having new set goals to achieve but in order to do this right we must have the right thought process and mindset.
What we do most times in having new year resolutions is setting new goals, having new plans, trying to create a new us forgetting our underachieved plans and set goals the previous year and that we were the same persons the previous year and still same persons the new year. Rather than saying there is going to be a new me come 2019, say there is going to be an improved, better and a wiser me come 2019. All you need do is to re-aim, re-gear and re-commit your efforts.
Below are few ways to make your new year resolutions effective.
- First of all, express gratitude for the little things you achieved in the previous year and for being alive to witness a new year. When you look back the previous year, there will always be something to be grateful to God about even if is just a thing. No matter how insignificant you think the little things you achieved the previous year are or did not achieve at all, still remain grateful. A heart of gratitude helps and motivates you to push forward. The little things are often the most important things at the end of the day. A heart of gratitude practiced every day in the new year also helps to move you forward towards achieving your set goals.
- Follow up on your plans set the previous year. Take those plans into the new year and ensure to see them to completion. Nothing wrong in carrying your plans of the old year into the new year. You will find fulfillment when you are able to effectively carryout the old plans to completion and confidence will be gained to pursue a new set goal. Never abandon old projects.
- Add new plans to the old plans. Do not throw your old plans away just because you have a new set of ideas. For instance, if your new set goal is to loose more weight than you did the previous year then add new or more exercises to your work out plan. If you were walking add brisk walking and then gradually start jogging. Add a new business strategy to the the previous strategy used in your business. Have a new business idea? Then run it along side your present business. Add more savings to your previous savings.
- Do not make endless lists of plans or goals to be achieved when you set new goals. Set out major goals even if its just one and see it to completion. It's much better to have one or two major goals fulfilled than having so many and none achieved.
- Treat your set goals one after the other according to priority. Don't start treating all set goals at a time or multiple goals together. One set goal achieved in a year is better than having no goal achieved or haphazard achievement. Pick the most important goal and start working on, then move on to the next important goal when the most important is achieved.
- Set feasible and attainable goals. Don't go setting big goals that you can't achieve and then get all depressed and frustrated not being able to attain it. Nothing wrong in dreaming big but if you do, ensure the means and resources to do that are also feasible.
- Take baby steps as you work on your set goals. Don't rush towards achieving your goals. Take your steps towards achieving your goals bit by bit. Don't be too anxious about it but be calm, focused and resolute in achieving your set goals.
- The last but not the least is being optimistic and trusting God you can achieve every goal set. Hand your goals over to God and believe it is possible to achieve every goal. "With men this is impossible but with God all things are possible." Mathew 19:26. Trust God to see you through it all . Do not be scared when it seems like everything is bleak and your head blank. "And the Lord answered me and said, Write the vision and make it plain upon tables that he may run that readeth it." Habakkuk 2:2. God already instructs we write our visions or goals in life. You have written yours and have made it plain by placing it where you will see it if possible every day and run with it. So there is nothing to fear. As long as you have set your mind to it you can achieve it.
The above points are few ways to effectively achieve your new year resolutions. You can add to it if you have other ways or drop your suggestions in the comment box so we can both learn from each other and others can learn too.
The necessity of setting new year resolutions its on individual perception. If you feel its necessary then go on and set the resolutions and be resolute in achieving them. When you set your mind on a thing and remain focused on it then its achievable. Focus is key.
