Governor Wike stated this during a Cocktail Party in honour of participants of the 2018 Senior Executive Course 40, Study Group 3 of the National Institute of Policy And Strategic Studies, Kuru at the Government House in Port Harcourt.

Represented by his Deputy Dr. (Mrs) Ipalibo Harry Banigo the Governor said

“Government takes security matters very seriously because we know that unless people feel secure, live secure and work securely you cannot really talk about development and development is key to us, we want to see our state and nation develop more than where we are today".

He said his Administration has undertaken the enactment of the anti kidnapping law, anti cultism law and has committed a lot of investments into the promotion of security of lives and properties across the state, and is supporting the security agencies with a lot of logistics such as the provision of vehicles, Armoured Personnel Carriers (APC), Gun Boats to ensure that our security agencies work maximally and be the best they can be.

He said conflicts in elections are occasioned by overzealous actions of security agencies acting out scripts written for them to cause disruption of the process of free and fair elections.

“So when you are talking about internal security you have to put emphasis on the need to maintain our nascent democracy. Anything that will not allow people to express their free will in voting and making their choice of leaders over turns security” Governor Wike quipped.

According to the Rivers State Governor, the fact that people feel marginalized is also another cause of conflict, noting that there have been reports of environmental degradation in Ogoni Land with failed promises to clean up the area. “Two to three years after nothing has been done, what can cause insecurity other than this? The people cannot access their farm lands, drink clean water, so anything that will make people feel they are not being carried along could cause some level of insecurity” He stressed.

In his remarks the Leader of the Team Rear Admiral Ahamefule Eluwa said  they came to research on the topic “Strengthening Internal Security Frame Work & Community Policing”, noting that their mission was to interact with the State Government, Local Government and engagement with the communities as well as stake holders which according to him was very vibrant.

He said Rivers State is ahead of other States in the quest for Community Policing, having established a law on the Neighbourhood Safety Watch.
