Rivers State Deputy Governor Dr. (Mrs.) Ipalibo Harry Banigo says failure on the part of citizens to behave responsibly is responsible for the increase in the prevalence of HIV/AIDs in the World.
In a statement from the Government House in Port Harcourt to commemorate the 2017 World AIDs Day, Dr. Banigo said HIV/ AIDs is a behavioural disease which is transmitted through the body fluid of infected persons.
According to the Deputy Governor who is a Public Health Physician, a lot of people still believe HIV/AIDS is a myth which does not exist or is transmitted through fetish means if it exists at all.
“For those People who think AIDS does not exist, AIDS is real, abstinence from unprotected sex, mutual fidelity amongst non infected partners, avoidance of the use of unsterilized sharp objects, transfusion of blood screened from HIV, as well as the use of Prevention of Mother to Child Transmission Protocol are ways to mitigate the spread of the virus” Dr. Banigo stressed.
Dr. Banigo who advised against the stigmatization and discrimination of people living with the virus said “the Nyesom Ezenwo Wike led Administration on its part will continue to invest hugely in the health sector to ensure that the Rivers People continue to enjoy good health and an improved life expectancy”.
It would be recalled that the 1st of December each year has been set aside to commemorate the entry of HIV into the World and is used to create awareness about the negative impact.
