Yeah, its my dad's birthday today so I feel like sharing a piece on the difference between a father and a dad and with this I hope and sincerely wish all fathers and potential fathers will pick a clue from this and improve on fatherhood.
This article is dedicated to my beloved father who wasn't just a father but also a dad to me and my siblings.
It is so easy to confuse a dad for a father. Both words mean same thing for almost Everyone. Even when you search the meaning of both in the dictionary you tend to get same meaning.
But a critical look at both meanings will give you a clear picture of what a dad means from a father. So let's look at it together.
A father I believe is just a biological concept. It is a term used for one who biologically is a father to a child and when critically looked into, a father is term used for reproductive purposes directly or indirectly.
Directly, a father becomes a father through a sexual relationship with a woman or indirectly through sperm donation.
A dad on the other hand is one who has a special relationship with his child (a father and child relationship). A dad is one who helps to nurture a child as the child grows up into adulthood. He provides and is protective of the child.
You also find in some instances of men who were great dads but were not biological fathers to the children they helped to nurture. Some fathers only did the work of impregnating a woman and ended up just fathering the child but leaves the role of a dad to someone else.
A dad is readily available and present in his child's life as the child grows up. He takes part of every activity of the child. As a dad he disciplines the child with love not failing to correct the child where the child needs correction and as a result the child grows up into adulthood becoming a better and a responsible person in life.
A dad does not just provide for the financial needs of his child but also looks out for the emotional, mental, social and spiritual well being of his child. He becomes the role model of his child. The child grows up making references to his/her dad as a way of giving examples to his/her peers or to himself.
A man can either just be a father or become both a father and a dad.
A father is hardly present in his child's life. He is just a figure head with no responsibility or relationship with his child whether he fathered that child directly or indirectly ( sperm donation). He has no role in the child's life.
With the above simple illustration I want to believe the difference is made clear especially to the men out there both fathers and potential fathers who intend becoming great dads to their children.
For those who never had the privilege of enjoying a dad while growing up you can still make a difference in your child's or children's lives and if your dad is still alive celebrate and show him love no matter your experience as a child.

Quote for the day - Any man can be a father but it takes someone special to be a dad.
