The Rivers State Government says the reconstitution of the State Task Force on Immunization is geared towards achieving a total eradication of poliomyelitis.
The Deputy Governor, Dr. (Mrs.) Ipalibo Harry Banigo disclosed this during the 3rd quarterly meeting of the State Task Force on Immunization at the Government House in Port Harcourt.
She said the State Chief Executive, Nyesom Ezenwo Wike has continued to take active leadership in ensuring that the crippling disease and indeed all vaccine preventable diseases are eradicated completely through an increase in immunization activities.
According to Dr. Banigo it is a multi sector Task Force committee involving all partners, the media, religious bodies, traditional institution and other critical stake holders who are also committed to the course.
She said the State has completed its Immunization Plus Days Campaigns as well as the Maternal, New Born and Child Health Week.
“Up till August 2017 we have observed 12 months free, we have to press on to fulfil the polio eradication status”. Dr. Banigo enthused.
Also speaking the State Health Educator, Dr. Mrs Doris Nria expressed the need to intensify routine immunization, where parents and caregivers take their children to the nearest health centres to be vaccinated against polio and other vaccine preventable diseases.
She urged the public to disregard rumours of adulterated vaccines, stressing that the vaccines are safe and potent.
