RIVERS APC AND THE POLITICS OF UNDER-DEVELOPMENT BY SIMEON NWAKAUDU

Weeks ago when the leader of Rivers APC, Mr Rotimi Amaechi hosted his 52nd Birthday, his major grouse against Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Ezenwo Wike was the fact that the governor has been nicknamed Mr Project. Amaechi and his party men wept at that event, saying they were not in agreement with that appellation.

In fairness to them, they are entitled to their opinion, but the facts are known to all Nigerians. Governor Wike in the last two years has defied the current economic downturn, churning out people-oriented projects across the state.

Therefore, it is disheartening that the leadership of Rivers State APC would write to the Acting President Yemi Osinbajo, asking him not to commission projects executed by the Wike administration, on the weak premise that it reduces the chances of the party to win elections in the state.

Similarly, the Rivers APC sponsored an "integrity challenged group" to write another petition to the Chief Justice of Nigeria, asking him not to lay the foundation stone for the construction of Judges Quarters in the state.

These two protest letters by the Rivers APC are testimonies of the bitterness they hold against Rivers people. These treacherous politicians only think about the next election. They have no regard for good governance and quality projects to improve the living condition of the people.

Hear the Rivers APC in its protest letter: "The reference to the governor as 'Mr. Project' jokingly made by the Ag. President the last time he was in the State is still being used by Gov. Wike to taunt, ridicule and insult APC and its members in Rivers State to this day. We cannot encourage him with further materials to continue his anti-APC propaganda against us ".

The Rivers APC refuse to recognise the fact that the developmental projects being executed by the Wike administration are for Rivers people. The projects are beneficial to PDP members, APC members and non politicians. The governor is building a New Rivers , where good governance has been elevated beyond political considerations.

As a leader, the Acting President understands the distinction between politics and good governance. Governor Wike has entrenched good governance premised on rapid projects delivery in Rivers State.

The following projects: Chokocho-Umuechem-Ozuzu Road in Etche LGA, IgboEtche-Chokocho-Rumuokwurusi Interchange Road, Rukpokwu Market Junction to Aluu Road in Obio/Akpor LGA and Rumuokoro Market and Park in Obio/Akpor LGA will be commissioned by the Acting President during his visit. These are key projects that have transformed the benefiting communities.

The principal philosophy of the 2017 Rivers State budget which is online is captured by the following statement:

"The unprecedented increase in the capital expenditure, once again, underscores our commitment to direct substantial resources to the critical growth sectors of our economy, including addressing infrastructure gaps to accelerate economic growth, secure the State and improve the well-being of our people.

"The 2017 budget strategy is designed towards aligning expenditures to priorities that best support our economic transformation agenda."

The development agenda of the Wike administration is for all Rivers people . It has no political party colouration.

The Rivers APC and her hired hands have no reason to feel threatened. The good roads, bridges, schools, hospitals, markets and empowerment programmes being churned out have placed Rivers State above her peers.

Rather than bicker over the politics of the numerous projects being delivered to the good people of the state, the Rivers APC should find solace in the fact that Governor Wike has lived up to his promise to create a New Rivers State through pro-people projects.

For Governor Wike, the development of Rivers State transcends politics. He is Governor of all Rivers people. He holds their mandate in trust. No section will be denied pro-people, no matter the propaganda of misguided politicians.

The Rivers APC should outgrow the bitterness of electoral defeat and embrace the virtue of development. They cannot win over Rivers people by being agents of under-development. They should learn from Governor Wike who is firm proponent of politics of development.
