The Rivers State Government has expressed its readiness to partner with Non Governmental Organizations and civil societies to bring peace, development and progress to the Rivers People.

Rivers State Deputy Governor, Dr. Mrs. Ipalibo Harry Banigo stated this during a two- day Prime workshop organized by the Christian Medical and Dental Association in Partnership with the Rivers State Government in Port Harcourt.
She said efficient and effective Health services delivery is one of the cornerstone policies of the New Rivers Vision led by Chief Barrister Nyesom Ezenwo Wike.
According to her the four years preceding the Wike administration the health sector had suffered from severe neglect.
“The General Hospitals in the State were left to rot. Rivers people in rural areas were denied access to health care as the staff of the State Primary Health Care Management Board had embarked on an indefinite strike” the Deputy Governor stressed
Dr. Banigo who said a holistic improvement of healthcare delivery was one of the cardinal pledges that Governor Nyesom Wike made to the Rivers People during the electioneering campaigns.
Disclosed that, in the last two years, Governor Wike has worked towards creating a comprehensive healthcare framework that caters for the needs of all people living and working in Rivers State.
“The Present Administration has invested in the improvement of health facilities and services across the State, while taking care of the welfare of health workers in the State” she further said.
According to Dr. Banigo Acting President Yemi Osinbajo was in Rivers State to flag-off the construction of the ultra-modern doctors’ quarters at the Braithwaite Memorial Specialist Hospital (BMSH.) in a bid to provide decent accommodation for doctors which she said is expected to translate to better services.
Dr. Banigo said “Training and retraining of our health workers is very important to us. Hence, the willingness of the Rivers State Government to partner with CMDA to hold this PRIME workshop for workers in the healthcare industry including doctors, pharmacists, nurses, laboratory scientists, records assistant, radiographers, cleaners, drivers etc”.
PRIME Workshop According to the Deputy Governor, is an important instrument used worldwide to engage health professionals to give of their best in the service of humanity.
“PRIME the acronym for Partnership in International Medical Education advocates, teaches and exemplifies patient centred-practice in medicine so that as health professionals and workers in the health care industry, we see the whole patient, in the context of his family and his community. This portends to enhancing greater confidence in stakeholders in the health sector, both in the public and private sector” Dr. Banigo said.
She expressed hope that after this PRIME Workshop, there will be a tangible positive difference in the care and treatment given to our patients and their families.
Dr, Banigo who said the State Government received with great regret the news of the kidnap of Dr. Alex Akani of the UPTH thanked God that he has been released.
She commended the security agencies in the State for this timely intervention stressing that Perpetrators of this dastardly act would surely be brought to book as we have relevant laws in the State to deal with the situation.
The State Government according to her would continue to commit to the security and safety of all health personnel and persons living and working in Rivers State.
Also Speaking the Chairman of the occasion Dr. Okere Iragonima said the essence of the Workshop was to re awaken the spirit of compassion amongst health care givers and urged them to recognise the place of God in their profession.
The National Chairman of CMDA Dr. Oyetunji Soriyon said the Association which is a Non Governmental Organization believes in training and building capacity of health care professional in partnership with Government since government alone cannot tackle the health care challenges of the people.
Also speaking the State Chairman of CMDA Dr. Kenneth Ordu said human beings are made up of the body soul and spirit and urged to have a whole person approach in the treatment of patients.
In his address the Chairman of the Local Organizing Committee Dr.Friday Aaron said the workshop is targeted at making all healthcare professionals have a positive attitudinal change.
In his good will message Permanent Secretary of the Rivers State primary Health Care Management Board Dr. Agba Harry commended the efforts of the organizers.
